A Maratona da Selva 2010

Acontecerá entre 7 ao 16 de Outubro na Floresta Nacional do Tapajós, considerada uma das mais belas unidades de conservação do brasileira pelas suas comunidades, biodiversidade e beleza cênica. São quase 600.000 hectares de reserva cercada por floresta densa e as águas do Rio Tapajós, um dos mais bonitos e menos poluídos do mundo.
A Maratona da Selva é uma competição de auto-suficiência, o que significa que os participantes terão que trazer sua própria alimentação e equipamento como rede de dormir, mosquiteiro, primeiros socorros etc.



Uma centena de participantes dos mais diversos países tentarão cobrir o percurso de 200 km que é dividido em seis etapas com postos de inspeção distribuídos a cada 6 km, onde os atletas são monitorados por uma equipe médica e reabastecidos com água. A etapa mais longa é de 80 km e parte dela deverá ser percorrida a noite!
No final de cada etapa eles dividirão um acampamento previamente construído pelos comunitários e apoiados pela Exercito, Corpo de bombeiros. Enquanto uns descansam, outros alimentam seus blogs, web sites e familiares através de um sistema efetivo de internet, com informações sobre o evento que está entre os cinco maiores do planeta.
Quase não chove durante o mês de outubro, mas os competidores terão que lidar com a alta umidade da região e temperaturas que chegam 40 c de dia e 24C à noite. Ainda os competidores devem preparar-se para um eventual pé d’água do verão Amazônico.
Não é necessário ter experiência com a floresta para participar da maratona, mas é fundamental estar em boa forma e estar determinado. Um corpo em forma é necessário para percorrê-la, entretanto uma mente forte é fundamental para concluí-la.

MARATONA DA SELVA 2009

A expectativa de todos envolvidos na Maratona da Selva é grande para a edição de 2009. Este ano teremos a participação de competidores dos mais variados países e será a mais internacional das cinco edições.
Cerca de 100 atletas vindos da Austrália, Nova Zelândia, Estados Unidos, Canadá, México, China, Guiana Francesa, África do Sul, Egito, Estônia, Inglaterra, Escócia, Pais de Gales, Irlanda do Norte, Irlanda, Itália, Portugal, França, Dinamarca, Noruega, Suécia, Alemanha, e claro do Brasil estarão na linha de largada e sonham cruzar a linha de chegada desta vez em Santarém.
A competição poderá ser acompanhada como de costume pelos mais variados meios de comunicação. Blogs, web sites, revistas, jornais e estações de rádio e televisão no Brasil e no exterior.

Um dos últimos a se inscrever foi Robert Bennett dos Estados Unidos que participou no ano passado, mas terminou sendo evacuado no final da terceira etapa para a UTI em Santarém onde passou a maior parte da corrida acompanhando pela televisão. Robert está determinado a chegar a Santarém correndo ao invés de ambulancha!

FLONA

Hoje, a Floresta Nacional do Tapajós está completando 35 anos!
São 545 mil hectares de floresta, água, cultura e muita história...

Era uma vez uma grande área verde, banhada por um belo rio, que se transformou numa área protegida. E as pessoas que lá viviam não poderiam permanecer. Foram muitos embates entre moradores e órgão gestor da Unidade. E, com o passar do tempo, a floresta vinha sofrendo com seu uso inadequado. Após longo período de conversas, começamos a trabalhar juntos, em prol do benefício coletivo e do meio ambiente saudável. Muitos deixaram um pouco de si aqui...técnicos, moradores, pesquisadores, visitantes...e, é claro, contamos com a ajuda do Mapinguari, do Garcia (cobra-grande em Tauari), da Rosinda (encantada)...para construir o caminho de conquistas da FLONA do Tapajós, nos tornando referência nacional. Os desafios ainda são imensos e temos muito a fazer, somando nossas forças em busca do desenvolvimento sustentável local e da conservação da biodiversidade.

is a native fruit abundant during the race. The nut is quite popular outside brazil, the apple contains proteins, fiber and vitamins. Whei you pick up from the tree make sure your lips dont touch the nut. It contains resins that will burn your skin. The liquid also stains your clothes. It is delicious though.

Encontra-se perto de centros urbanos e protege muitas espécies raras e endêmicas.
´E habitata por cerca de 1400 famílias divididas em 29 comunidades, na maioria às margens do Rio Tapajós, vivem de forma tradicional, nos quase 600.000 hectares
que compõem a reserva.
Ecoturismo, projetos sustentáveis e pesquisas cientificas são desenvolvidas
na Flona Tapajós/ICMBio e por outras organizações conservacionistas e
instituições cientificas.

The Tapajós National Forest is the second largest conservation unit located in the Tapajos river watershed, a region of great biodiversity, with many species endemic to the region, and extremely scenic.
It is the only conservation unit near an urban centre that protects such a large portion of flora and fauna of clear water river systems.

There are over 1400 families divided in 29 communities, mostly settled along the Tapajos River, living in traditional style in the near 600.000 hectares that compose the reserve.
Ecotourism, several other sustainable projects and scientific researches are currently being carried in the reserve with the support of ICMBio and other conservation and scientific organizations.

This morning we went to IBAMA's office to drop some tee-shirts drop and get some more details Jungle Marathon. I have several friends there, and I had chance to get this shot with Domingos who works at Tapajos National Forest for ages. A cool guy indeed.

Sou aquilo que continuo plantando.

Arthur Alexander(son of Steve Alexander, from Alaska and Dr Aurea from Stm and Bosque Sta Lucia, a portion of quite biodiversified rainforest surrounded by soybeans with a nice museuam in the centre) who lives in Santarem for over 30 years. The Alexander's have contributed immensively for the ecotourism industry and recently published their debut book about Santarem, whose cover is actually composed by Arthur's)posted these pictures in the net. I just thought it would be fair to share with you all. He currently studies Marketing in Belem is one of the brains and soul that Santarem needs to bring back. We have enought football players to share with the world but not conservationists and wildlife photographers.
